I have never been a fan of greatest hits albums. I really prefer to collect the full albums the way that they were intended to be listened to by the artist and not the record company. There are of course exceptions. There are some artists that are more singles type of artists and their song contain basic filler and not much else. There are also great artist that land a greatest hits album that is so great that even through years and years of the lable repackaging the same material, they keep certain hits titles in print because of their greateness and their iconic stature. Albums like Elton John's, The Eagles, James Taylor and this album. Al Green put out great album's, but man alive this album is just awesone from beginning to end. One of the problems with hits collections is that as an artist develops over their carrer their styles change and the go through phases and production changes. When you put those things together in one place it can sound really dissjointed. This is what a lot of boxed sets suffer from. While they are a great way for someone to get all of their essiential recordings, it is not very enjoyable to listen to from end to end. This album doesn't have that problem, the songs just flow together like they were written and recorded in the smae afternoon. Al Green is one of the best of the genre. If you even have a mild liking of 70s R&B this is the place to start. If you like current R&B, you should check this out so you can see how it should sound. The new stuff is so overproduced it looses all of the soul and since this is soul music, that is pretty much inexcusable. Al is much more concerned with the quality and the feeling of the notes that he is singing than how many notes he can hit. Brilliant!
