I have beed struggling with this album for months now. I can say that I have made progress. As far as the excercise is concerned, I have succeded in that I can understand the appeal of the album. At least to the critics. As Bryan pointed out it is a very lush production, far more so thatn you find on a record today. Which is a really sad state of affairs. With the amount of money that the industry makes, it is startling how little of it actually goes into production as opposed to marketing.
Anyway, that being said. I am not sure what the appeal of the album is to the lay person. Which is excactly why no one knows who Love is, much less have ever heard of this album. I will say that it does show that the Rolling Stone list is not wholly a popularity contest. The record itself is horribly dated, both lyrically and musically. It is also a downer, this is why it is on the list. It looks at the summer of love and holds up a mirror showing all that was wrong with sex and drugs and reckless abandon. I am not a fan of that type of reality, but so it goes.
To sum up...great production, very mature music and themes. Not very fun or enjoyable to listen to.
